The Shortening of Radio’s Lifespan

Radio is dying—and most people haven’t even noticed. In fact, they have never thought of radio as a whole and where it is going. I am a twenty-four year old male with a degree in broadcasting. I interned and worked as a promotions assistant for a group of stations on the Jersey shore. I have been on the inside. I am witnessing radio start to die.

The 18-25 year old demographic falls into three categories: hip-hop (Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, etc.), modern rock (Weezer, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, etc.), and hot adult contemporary (Ashley Simpson, Maroon 5, Ryan Cabrera, etc). In the past few months, many markets swapped formats from modern rock to target a different demographic (urban, Spanish), isolating the young white Americans from terrestrial radio.

Plenty of stations play the top 40 or “all the hits.” And hip hop is in all the markets. And yes that is more then half of the 18 – 25 demographic and not just young people listen to these stations, even though the AC stations target woman over 30, so you have plenty of people listening right now which bring you advertisers and make you your money.

Furthermore, the young do not have as much money as older listeners, and therefore, they do not spend as much money. This makes it harder to sell to the advertisers, which makes formats like modern rock not as big of a money maker then a Top 40 station, hip-hop station or a soft rock station.

The 18-25 demographic is the most technically savvy of any. However, with all the technological advancements in the past ten years—Ipods, Satellite Radio, Internet Radio, etc—who is going to be targeted in fifteen years when the current 18-25 demographic is older and in the 30 - 45 demographic (that is currently the demographic being targeted by a majority of the stations)?

They will be using XM, Sirius, and their mp3 players because in 2005 the radio companies switched their favorite station to something else. That switch took away their musical outlet. Or worse yet, the stations did not play the songs they wanted to hear and forced them to get an Ipod or Satellite Radio.

Because of this, free terrestrial radio is useless to them. The current 30 - 45 demographic will stay with it forever because they have the “if it is free, why am I going to pay for it” attitude—because the stations are playing what they want to hear.

Many of my friends in the 18-25 demographic have expressed distress over the dying radio. A friend recently said that he is “done with terrestrial radio”. He got XM when it came out, and his Ipod will be delivered this week.

I do not have the answers to fix this future. I can say that if radio companies do not embrace technology and use it to their advantage they are going to continue to lose more and more young people. And even though they are not going to bring in as much money now with formats targeting America’s youth, they will when the youth grows up, gets full-time jobs, and starts families. I hope that radio companies will straighten themselves out. I hope the powers in charge realize this because I love working in this industry—and I would hate to see it destroyed because of a few executives needed even more money now. Please think about the future and not just today.

Radio from the inside from the eyes of the young [Apr. 12th, 2005|06:47 pm]
In the past few months in many markets have been swapping formats from modern rock to target a different demographic (urban, spanish), isolating the young white Americans. To make it easy I will split the 18-25 year old demographic into three categories: hip-hop (Eminem, Snoop, 50 Cent, etc. ), modern rock (Weezer, Pearl Jam, Radiohaed, etc.), and those that will listen to whatever the radio station deems radio worthy and hip(Ashley Simpson, Maroon 5, Ryan Cabrera, etc). The 18-25 demographic is also the most technically savvy of any.

Yes, there are plenty of stations playing top 40, “the hits”, and hip hop in all the markets. And yes that is more then half of the 18 – 25 demographic and not just young people listen to the top 40 and “the hits” stations, even though the AC stations target woman over 30, so you have plenty of people listening right now which bring you advertisers and make you your money.

I will agree and say that the young do not have as much money so they do not spend as much money as older listeners which makes it harder to sell to the advertisers, which makes formats like modern rock not as big of a money maker then a Top 40 station, hip-hop station or a soft rock station However, with all the technological advancements in the past ten years (Ipods, Satellite Radio, Internet Radio, etc) who is going to be targeted in fifteen years when the current 18-25 demographic is older and in the 30 - 45 demographic that is currently the demographic being targeted by a majority of the stations. They will be using XM, Sirius, and their mp3 players because in 2005 the radio companies switched their favorite station to something else, which took away their musical outlet or the stations did not play the songs they wanted to hear and forced them to get an Ipod or Satellite Radio.

What makes you think that they will come back to free terrestrial radio? The current 30 - 45 demographic will stay with it forever because they have the “if it is free, why am I going to pay for it” attitude, and the stations are playing music that they want to hear.

Think of it this way. If you go to a restaurant and your food is horrible and the service is total crap. The next week when you are planning on going out to dinner are you going to go back to that place that you had a terrible experience? Most likely not. The same goes for radio. I told one friend this theory and he agreed with me and said that he is “done with terrestrial radio”. He got XM when it came out and his Ipod will be delivered this week. Another friend did not agree and said that they will thrive because they have local news, weather, and traffic and formats like “Jack” (stations that play any random song they feel) will evolve with the times. Local weather and traffic is available on satellite, and, including the local news, on the internet. The same internet that gets more and more wireless every year. Which gives talk and news stations an advantage in the future because in an emergency you might not have a computer handy to access the internet.

Another reason the youth are moving away from radio is they are too commercial and do play enough variety and new music, and they play same songs every few hours (Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, Kelly Clarkson “Since U Been Gone”, and 50 Cent’s “Candyshop”) playing them out. They do not want to hear that song again so they turn something else on. You can not say that there is not enough new original music available. Websites like purevolume.com have 119,000 artist profiles of signed and unsigned bands to preview and if you are in a band you can make a page on the site for your band so it can get exposed. If there are not any stations playing new music, where is the next big thing (Franz Ferdiand, Dresden Dolls, Muse, etc.) and new young bands (Futureheads, Arcade Fire, Decemberist) going to come from? Is it just going to be the current play list of artist for ever and the only place to find and hear new artist is on college radio stations, the internet and satellite?

I do not have the answers to fix this future. I can say that if radio companies do not embrace technology and use it to your advantage you are going to continue to loss more and more young people. And even thought you are not going to bring in as much money now with formats targeting America’s youth, you will when they grow up, get fulltime jobs, start families, and all the other stuff our parents currently do now in 2005. There are some out there that are hoping that radio companies will straighten themselves out, but they are not going to wait forever.

I edited it a bit on 4/14 besed on some comments i got from lauran and cara. i hope its cool guys

Two concerts in three nights. My ears are still ringing. [Nov. 9th, 2004|05:00 pm]
[music |Hum "Counting Stars"]

The shows were Muse on Saturday, and The Starting Line/Yellowcard Monday night. They both were at the Electric Factory.

Muse gets \m/\m/\m/\m/\m/ - I didn’t know 3 guys could rock so fucking much.
TSL/YC gets \m/\m/\m/\m/ - It was the well needed puck rock show.

The opening band for Muse was called The Zutons. They kind of sucked. They were not as bad as that Weatus sound-a-like band I saw a few years ago, not that sucky. Their music was kind of cool, the singing was crappy. They did play a kick as instrumental as their last song. During that song they used this piano flute thing that was pretty cool. The guitarist was dressed straight from the sixties.

Yellowcard had 2 bands. Craig’s Brother and The Matches. Craig’s Brother was dumb. They were your unoriginal pop punk band that sounds like Simple Plan and the new stuff from Good Charlotte. They get a few points for trying to make R.E.M.’s Losing My Religion punk rock, other then that nothing. The Matches were kind of cool. They were punk. They had a few parts with some crazy digital effects on their voices that was dumb, but other then that I was enjoying it. They were dressed like late seventies, early eights punks. One had this big hair thing going, the singer had a Mohawk with on side of it long and the other shaved. The Matches were the best of all the openers.

The Muse performance was just awesome. They got to be the best live band on the planet right now. Most of the songs they played were from Absolution. They didn’t play Muscle Museum witch was a surprise, but they never play all the songs you want them or thing they are going to play. They had a cool light show, the LCD’s on the piano at times played like they were attached to the piano so that when certain keys were hit that light would come up. They have such an interesting stage presents too. The singer said like 8 words that were not lyrics, the basses 2, and the drummer like 19. They just come out and fucking rock! They had an encore, which I thought they would have just played straight threw the whole set. The solos at the end of Stockholm Syndrome were so fucking cool, and Hurricanes and Butterflies was awesome too. At one point of the show, it got so quit because of a pretty piano solo that I could heard anything in the Electric Factory, and then it got loud and rocked again, fuckin cool! You must defiantly go see this band live next time they come around. I am going again. They are doing a sonic session this coming week, if its acoustic then that is going to be so different and I can’t wait to hear it, if it’s plugged then its still going to be cool.

Now the puck rock show, was cool, but couldn’t compare to the energy and rockyness of the Muse show. The Starting Line played a few new songs from their new album which sounds like its going to be pretty good. Kenny can sing better now that he is getting older and his voice isn’t cracking all the time. A few years ago it was really bad, and it did it a few times last year at the Fez. He was drinking tea during the show, which isn’t very punk but who gives a shit. Yellowcard had a cool show too. They played a lot of old shit from One For the Kids which I was hoping for, but they didn’t play Something of Value and Big Apple Heartbreak, o well. The drummer had an awesome solo, one that I wouldn’t have expected. They had stuff about the election on the piano they played at the beginning and an encore song and on the banner behind them, but I couldn’t read it all, and then when I got closer it fell to reveal more different stuff. They did the split the crowd thing they did at the show with Less Than Jake, think Bravehart battle without the kilts and weapons and thousands of people and put it in the Factory, when you run at each other and then a bunch of pits open up all over. The LTJ show had more pushing and moshing and stuff, probably because the LTJ show isn’t as young I guess, but it was cool. They played slower stuff last night then before. I would go see them Yellowcard and Starting Line again. I got to crowd surf which I haven’t done since Warped Tour 2003, but I ended up like 8 feet or so from the stage by the end so it wasn’t very long, but it’s so much fun.

I have to mention the girls because there were a lot of them. The girls at Muse were hotter then Yellowcard, they were also older. There was one cute girl at Yellowcard that reminded me of Julie Iowa, and I would have talked to here but I couldn’t tell if she was out of high school yet, because more of the crowd there probably was in high school still.

I love the rock shows. Can’t wait for the next one. I don’t know what it’s going to be though. I have not not had tickets to a concert since I got the tickets for Franz Ferdinand in August.

Eastern State Penatentary and Terror Behind the Wall [Oct. 21st, 2004|06:29 pm]
[mood | chipper]
[music |Shatner "Has Been"]

This review is for 2 things because Terror Behind the Walls takes Place at Eastern State. but first, a little history lesson.

Eastern State was opened in October of 1829. Prisoner One was Charles Williams, convicted of burglary. It was opened until 1971 with many upgrades and additions. It held criminals like Al Capone and Pep "the cat murdering dog". After its closing until the mid 1980's the prison is totally abandoned and left to crumble. It was also suggested to be torn down. Now it is a national history landmark and is owned by the city of Philadelphia. It is in the process of being restored to its previous grandeur.

Eastern State is such a cool looking building. I want to go back and just wonder the grounds during the day. I couldn’t because I was doing the Halloween Terror Behind the Walls. It is modeled after midlevel castles, so it has 30 feet high wall around it and is built completely of stone. totally awesome.

Terror Behind the Walls takes place completely inside different parts of the prison. The best part I thought was the prison itself. However, before you walk in you have to sign a waiver that says, in more words, "if the building falls it’s not our fault" and some other things because it is a ruin. Up until 2001 you had to wear hard hats on the tour. I'm not sure if you do for the daily tours anymore. The actors were great and had totally sweet makeup. I didn't get scared really, I thought it was more funny then scary, probably because of everyone else screaming. If it didn’t take place inside a ruined old penitentiary it wouldn’t have been nearly as awesome because the prison fits the vision of Halloween. I would definitely go again next year because they change it every season with new and cooler stuff. the new thing this season was the 3-D room.

William Shatner “Has Been” [Oct. 14th, 2004|07:17 pm]
William Shatner's new album was released on Shout! Factory Records and was produced and co-written by Ben Folds. Shatner has one other album that was released in 1968 and is called “Transformed Man”. It is an album that only can be cool if done by Captain Kirk himself. It’s kind of like the Priceline.com commercials from a few years ago if you remember them.
“Has Been” has 11 songs ranging from rock to western to even acapella. The songs themes ranging from love, death, things he dislikes, meeting the daughter he didn’t know he had for the first time and other experience he wanted to share with people. Shatner and Folds enlisted the help of many talented artist; Aimee Mann (“That’s Me Trying”), Henry Rollins (“I Can’t Get Behind That”), Joe Jackson (“Common People”), Lemon Jelly (“Together”), Brad Paisley (“Real”), and a full chorus (“You’ll Have Time”). Stand out songs are “I Can’t Get Behind That”, “Common People”, “Has Been”.

“Raise Your Voice” [Oct. 14th, 2004|07:16 pm]
“Raise Your Voice” is a film about a teenage girl from a small town going away to a summer music program in Las Angeles. She struggles from the death of her brother from a car accident, lying to her father because she did not want her to go, and the adversity from the other students who are participating in the program. The film stars Hilary Duff (Lizzie McGuire and Cheaper By the Dozen), Oliver James (What A Girl Wants), and John Corbett (The Visitor, Raising Helen). It is directed by Sean McNamara who also directed Duff in Casper Meets Wendy and a bunch of other television shows targeted for children and young adults.
The film is very predictable, but then again I am 23 years old and it is targeted for young teenagers. I like to call it a teenybopper chick flick because it follows the some of rules of a chick flick. Parts of it kept me entertained, mostly the music parts. Costar Johnny Lewis was the comic relief and Kat Dennings played a mean piano. Other parts were slow and other were not really needed.
The film also didn’t conclude some of the sub plots and the characters. Where does Jay go after the program? What happens to Kiwi and Sloane? And a few others. This film gets an OnDemand score, unless of course you totally have the hots for Hilary Duff. Then go see it right now, because that’s all will make part of your nine dollars worth it.

[music |ITumes Party Shuffle]

Since I am going to start reviewing things, I am going to need some sort of rating system. Today I thought of 2 systems. One for films and one for albums and other random things that I decide to review.

Film: this system is based on where you should see the movie and/or how much should be spent to see this film.
Cinema – Good film. Good enough to see at your local cinema house.
Video – Good film, but not good enough to go spend 9 bucks for at the cinema house.
OnDemand – This film is only worth watching if it is broadcasted on cable or OnDemand if nothing else is on.
Not Worth Seeing – I don’t think I have to explain this one.

Albums and other stuff: it’s like the star system only with \m/ instead of a star.
Totally Awesome - \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/
Good- \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/
Average - \m/ \m/ \m/
It’s Alright - \m/ \m/
Absolute Shite - \m/

Now let’s get started

OK, so i havent used this thing in a few months. so i figure ill try and start using it again. but instead of just writing about the stupid shit i did today or yesterday, i will write reviews of things. things like films, albums, televisions shows, concerts, food, beer, or whatever the fuck else i want to review at that current time.

why did i deside to do this you might ask? here it is... last week i went to see the premiere of the new hilary duff movie "raise your voice" with audrey because she has to write a review of it for this free newspaper she writes for. so since she was writing one i will. and since i dont have a newspaper to put it in i will put it here on this thing. but i have to run to the pep boys first.

in other news:
i got a new car - accord 01 white
i got a new website - www.scubesquad.com (yeah atom!)

killer cardinal! [Jul. 15th, 2004|12:23 pm]

[music |yellowcard sonic session]

so last night i was going to first energy park for a wobm event. and we are driving up the parkway somewhere between toms river and burkley twp. these 2 birds are flying around like birds do. and you know they get really close to your car sometimes? well, this one got too close. it nailed the corner of the windshield. we saw the feathers fly and everything. then i noticed i had bird guts all over my shirt. luckly there was a carls fencing shirt in the van or i would be promoting with bird guts all over me. we thought it was crazy what we just seen. we laugh about it for the ride to the event. about half way through the event sabastion goes into the van to get something and sees the bird, dead of course, in front of the marti with a big whole in it. and we thought it just flew next to the van. how lucky of a shot it was for him to go off the windshield then into my window and not hit me or the chair to bounce of the marti.

also, even thought there was a windshield in front of me, i still ducked out of the way, even thought it would go off the windshield. maybe thats why it didnt hit me.

snoop dogg doing a rock song... yeah snoop! it was an ok song, but for a dude that raps, makes porn, stars in hollywood films, and does loads of other stuff and usually raps, then good.

the wierd al concert was cool. i enjoyed it very much. the traffic to pnc sucked. it took almost 2 hours to get there from brodys and its only like 43 miles.

graduation - way to go guys!

happy birthday beth, michele, and jessica!

cara is the ramapo district president of the squad and beth is here vice president.

michele branch is hot

franz ferdinand is an awesome band...if you dont know them listen to them. its like electic 6 meats the strokes, meats ultracool

i wiped out on the bike last week. my index finger and thumb on my right hand hurt a lot. the funny thing is i landed on my left side. ill have to go get it looked at this week sometime.

wobm was boring as hell today. 5 people came over to us, however i saw 2 cars almost create huge accidents because they cant read the big NO TURNS sign.
founders day was fun, lots of people and that meat on a stick from the chinese stand was awesome. at one point on the main stage was this band from TR south, 4 girls that looked no older then 15, who were 100 times better then life speed or what ever that crappy ass band that played at jenk's was called.

liberty resources is still boring, kohls schedules me on the weekends like they are not supposed too, and school is over this week.

the hoduliks are super awesome. they have made my life 100million times easyer.

i need a massage from b-dette. i realized from the bitchin wipeout that even thought i can act 13 sometimes i am not. i used to take falls a lot better. its not going to stop my from being crazy.

awesome alex called me crazy because i made a wobm stick out of some stickers and the bannerwrap cardboard. i dont think thats that crazy...do you?

i got a pair of jeans for 85 cents at kohls the other day.

imposter was a dumb movie.

our PJ's is better then the haddenfield and cherry hill one.

band of brothers is awesome.

so its been a few weeks now and its getting easyer, but noone ever said this was ez. falling out of love is 700 times harder then falling in love.

showering outside is fun! when i have a castle or house i got to have a shower outside. its much more refreshing with the fresh air and the sunlight. and there is a door, it wasnt outside for the whole world to see. it was at a beach house.

why do people forget how to drive when its raining?

the payroll lady at millenium messed up the paychecks, hopefully it will get fixed soon cause i am going to run out of money because gas prices are so fucking much. why have they gone up 40 cents in like 2 weeks? dont we have oil in texas and alaska to use instead of getting it from the middle east?

work was boring today.

the plan for tonight is to see troy. it looks good and them fruity ancient greeks knew how to battle so it should be cool.

[mood | hot]
[music |New Found Glory]

so i was given 2 "homework assignments" a few weeks ago. i thought they would be harder, but they werent. i finished them. thought i would let you know.

went bowling last night with chuck and andy. they had this kid with them. he was chewing tabacco (probably the most discusting thing in the entire world) and he was dressed like one on of them africain american chaps...you know, with the pants and shirts that would fit andre the giant quit well. i dont get it and i think it looks silly, but on a kid almost as white as me it is even more silly and ridiculous. i wonder where that fashion trend came from? if anyone knows could you let me know. i wish i got a picture to show you how ridiculous this kid looked.

its freakin hot today. i wish i had a pool or knew someone who had a pool that was opened to swim and chill in. i might go and take a run or rollarblade threw and around washington lake park. i got nothing else to do and i ate chinese buffet yesterday so i got to work all that crap off. the mongolian beef was good and i have no idea what it was made with besides beef and peppers...tasty though.

tomorrow is back to work. good old liberty resources. i think i got to put checks in numerical order....i know...you all wish you could do that for an afternoon. i got to get ONE job. i hate this multiple job stuff, even though i only work at 2 of them. the 1 is just plain boring. if i could sub more that would be so much better. its good money the only crappy part is getting up early.

i guess im going to go now and continue being hot and sweety even if it is my own fault.

first off, congrates to cara and lisa for a kick ass unity jam and RBF show. they were lots of fun and they went off without any problems even though there was no power until like 230.

i saw a few movies this week, here is my reviews:

van helsing - very cool and lots of fun. see it if you like monster like movies
the rookie - it was ok. ondemand it if your bored or need something to watch
starshipt troopers 2 - dont even waste your time. i turned it off because it was so bad. it may have gotten better but i doubt it.

wobm was fun this weekend. brian moore kept calling me mixmastersteve. hes cool though, he is going to teach me selector one day this week.

the new version of iTunes is cool. it has a party shuffle mode where it shows you the songs that are coming up in shuffle mode. so you get a heads up to what is coming up as apposded to not knowing

tonight is the wrpr awards dinner. i wish i could go but its on moms day and i have missed moms day the last 4 years so i cant this year. i was at rcnj so i had a reason so i shouldnt make up one this year. have fun guys and let me know how it goes.
